The reason why Thai people are afraid of speaking English is that they are often made fun of.
They are afraid because they are shy to make mistakes. Actually, the best way to practice English is to use it.

As from my experience, I used to be afraid of speaking English. When I was in primary school, I was made fun and teased when I spoke English. Back then, I read some of conversation with my friend. I put over inner while I speaking. Then, my friends laughed to me. I was shy. Sometimes, I was bullied when I made mistakes. They told me that "Why I pronounce some word like that". At that time, I lost my confidence. I feared to speak English, because I don't want to do mistakes. Finally, my teacher told me that "Don't worry about that. Keep practicing!" From then on, I practice a lot!

In my opinion, the reason that makes Thai people afraid to speak English is unfamiliarity. Thai people are not familiar with the language of English and any kind of language other than the Thai Language. The environment of using the English language in Thai society are still little because they have a little chance to speak English in their real-life situation. I think that if Thai people have more chance to speak English, they would love to speak it for sure.
