Why do people want to become parents? Is it selfish?

Humans are animals. All animals who exist today become parents otherwise they will simply extinct. In fact, EVERY living organism on earth reproduces. It is part of our “DNA” or cell biology. We are pre-programmed to desire to have children so that our species survives. Arguably, the reproduction and survival of the species is the only purpose of every living organism.
