Why are some people bad but we think that they are good?
People put so much effort into their appeal, trying to be as friendly and inviting as they can, that they put little effort into protecting themselves from unwelcome invasion. It is fairly easy to pierce the veneer of a bad person pretending to be good. Confidence games are effective because they play on common vulnerabilities. When we look beyond superficial niceties, when we shift the burden of proof onto the con man, when we maintain firm boundaries, the veneer of the con man begins to crack.
