How to deal with bullies in the classroom?
The most important thing to realize is that other parents, teachers, and staff, can also be bullies themselves. It causes most of the adult drama in both public and private schools and the workplace. Children are sponges and will mimic behavior the most observant, self-aware adult, isn’t aware that they have witnessed. Children will repeat this behavior BLATANTLY, and not as “shade” or rejection, but many times as physical or verbal outbursts, because they lack the adult mental capability of playing mind games.

As a teacher, you don’t wait for someone else to step in.
Don’t assume that because you referred the bullying behavior to the principal or a counselor that it’s going to be taken care of.
You take on the responsibility and see it through to the end.

As a teacher, bullying is, unfortunately, something we all have to deal with during our careers. Regardless of the age of students you teach, it finds its way into the classroom. It could be younger children; it might be more verbal or physical; and it happens in the hallway, lunchroom, or playground.

Take a stand and make a commitment. Decide right now that you will do whatever it takes to legally, safely, and ethically prevent bullying in your classroom. You must commit yourself to protect each student’s right to learn and enjoy school, above all.

The first step is to go back to what you do in the first days of school and reestablish classroom expectations in regards to respect and responsibility. In terms of respect, this means first and foremost modeling for you students how you expect them to speak to yourself and one another. A good way to start this is through simple role playing.
